Choosing a Newborn Photographer

Bringing a new baby into the world is one of the most magical moments in life, and capturing those first few days with professional newborn photography is a beautiful way to hold onto those memories forever. But with so many photographers out there, how do you choose the right one?

As a newborn photographer since 2014, I know how important it is to find someone you trust—someone who will handle your baby with care and create images you’ll cherish for a lifetime. Here are a few things to consider when picking the perfect photographer for your little one!

1. Studio vs. In-Home Sessions: What’s Best for You?

One of the first decisions to make is whether you’d like to visit a studio or have your session at home. There’s no right or wrong answer—just what feels best for your family! I offer both.

  • Studio Sessions: Coming to my cozy Niantic studio means you can just show up, relax, and let me take care of everything. I have a warm, comfortable space designed specifically for newborns, with soft blankets, beautiful wraps, hats/headbands, and all my backdrops ready to go. It’s a stress-free experience where you can sit back while I create those perfectly posed, dreamy images.
  • In-Home Sessions: Some families prefer the comfort of home, and I get it—those early days can feel like a whirlwind! Most photographers who travel to clients’ homes specialize in lifestyle sessions, which focus on natural, minimally posed moments of your baby and family in your own space. I offer lifestyle sessions at home but I also offer something most don’t—posed newborn sessions in-home, where I bring professional lighting and props to create that polished, studio-quality look without you having to leave the house.

2. Experience & Safety Matter

Newborn photography isn’t just about taking pictures—it’s about safely and gently working with brand-new babies. It’s so important to choose a photographer with experience handling newborns (I’ve been specializing in them for over a decade!) and someone trained in safe posing techniques. Your baby’s comfort and well-being always come first.

3. Find a Style You Love

Every photographer has a different artistic approach, so take a look at their portfolio to see if their style matches what you’re envisioning. Do you love soft, posed portraits of sleeping newborns wrapped in delicate fabrics? Or are you drawn to natural, unposed images of your baby snuggled in your arms at home? Think about what kind of images will make your heart happiest years from now and make sure your photographers portfolio aligns with your vision.

4. What’s Included?

Not all newborn photography packages are the same, so it’s always a good idea to ask what’s included—how many images you’ll receive, if props and outfits are provided, and whether you can upgrade to more photos. I offer different session options to fit a variety of needs, from simple and quick swaddled sessions to larger sessions with more images and variety in posing. All of my newborn session planning starts with a simple, visual questionnaire, that showcases all my main setup options and shows you every single prop I have on-hand.

5. When Should You Book?

Newborn sessions are best done within the first few weeks of life when babies are still super sleepy and curly. Since photographers book up months in advance, it’s best to secure your spot during pregnancy so everything is set before your little one arrives. If you’re late to the party, no worries, I always try to get families into my schedule if I can, so please don’t be afraid to reach out.
