Your Dream Maternity Session – Tips to Make it Amazing

What do your dream maternity photos look like? Before we go there, are you even thinking about documenting this amazing milestone in your families journey? When I was pregnant with my own little one I felt even more awkward than usual. I know some moms really fell that glow, but that wasn’t the case for me. That said, I knew I would regret not documenting that brief moment in time. So I took my husband out to the lake and created an image I cherish every day. In fact, the image below is hanging in my home on a 16×24 heirloom wood print. Randomly when my daughter sees it or one of the many photos of her through her first years, we’ll take a few moments to talk about them and how much she’s grown.

Whether you’re feeling that pregnancy glow, or not quite feeling yourself, I believe every mom should have beautiful maternity portraits. Trust and believe when you look back on your life and your own little ones sweet face as they grow, you’ll want to remember this magical time. I want you to see how truly beautiful the connection between you and your new little one is in this moment.

Here are some of my best tips for your session

When: Schedule your portraits ideally between 30-36 weeks depending on how you are feeling. I want to make sure you have that full baby belly but aren’t feeling too uncomfortable from pregnancy. Outdoor sessions may require a little bit of a walk depending on the location, and any session may require bending, sitting or laying in order to get that perfect shot. Because of this it’s critical that you are feeling the best you can for when we take your photos. *If you’re a mom of multiples your photos may be taken even sooner.

Where: Where do you envision your dream portraits? Sunset on the beach? Surrounded by beautiful forest? Next to a flowing waterfall? Maybe you love the look of studio portraits. We will work together to find the perfect location and look for the portraits of your dreams. Before your shoot we will talk about the many different maternity photography locations here in Connecticut and Rhode Island before we agree on a place that’s perfect for you. The session itself typically takes place 1.5-2 hours before sunset depending on location & weather.

What you should wear: This photoshoot is about you. Make sure you’re wearing something that you love how it looks on you. If you are wearing clothes from home, try them on and make sure you have the perfect undergarments to help make you look your best. If you’re thinking about wearing one of my many maternity gowns, set up some time to come over and pick your favorites. Though I have a large client closet full of beautiful gowns, sometimes you want something specific. New handmade gowns can take up to a month to produce and ship. I LOVE when we meet clients early and can start learning about you and your family.

What dad & other children should wear: If I’ve learned anything over the years is that dad and baby’s older siblings must be comfortable. Itchy or ill-fitting clothes can really bring down the mood of a small child. Keep in mind what the weather is like and ensure little ones are wearing appropriate layers that you are happy with being in your photographs. For colors, choose colors that coordinate well with mom has chosen without everyone wearing exactly the same thing (ex: berry, navy & gold work well together vs. everyone wearing navy).

Pamper Yourself: Consider professional hair & makeup or even a simple manicure. Though I’m still building my list of local hair & makeup artists to recommend, don’t be shy about asking if you want some recommendations. It’s amazing how these little things can shine through in your portraits.

I hope these simple recommendations help you with creating your dream maternity photos. For more details or to plan something special for you, message me and let’s get this friendship going!
